Golf in Canada

I was quite surprised by the number of golf courses we saw in Canada. I often saw them along the highway, like the one above. If not for a slightly greater degree of regularity in the grass, I wouldn’t have realized what I was looking at. There’s one right in the middle of Whistler, too. Of course, in a place that caters to hiking, several forms of bicycling, swimming, horseback riding, etc. a golf course or two should be no […]

Parking and Lots

The people at Lake Louise allowed the fence running along one edge of a parking lot to fall pretty far into disrepair. It rather surprised me. Such a pristine place looked like this. Then, of course, I start thinking of excuses reasons for it to be this way. First, it might have been the result of an awful lot of people driving into the fence. No money for repairs? So many repairs they can’t keep up? The lot was too […]

Long Weekend

I spent the entire weekend cleaning my rental house. I used to live there, so seeing what the renters did is painful. Took some paint, Formula 409, and elbow grease, but at least we made a dent. I’m so tired. Now to see what the new renters have to say about it.

Pardon Me

Please pardon me while I continue to freak out about the condition of my web site. I was planning on talking about Whistler today, since it’s more or less in chronological order. Instead, you get a random picture of a glacier. I’ll do something about Whistler on Thursday. Last week was quite the trying week for me. It started when the people who have been renting my old house for the last five years called to let me know they […]

Lake Louse, Again

My previous post on Lake Louse was just a quick photo, so I thought I should probably talk about it at more length. Lake Louse (the lake, as opposed to the nearby town) is a glacier-fed lake in Banff which sits around 5,000 feet above sea level. For me, that’s right at home. We stopped off to see it on our way to our hotel. Good thing, too, because the weather was great then, and miserable the next day.

Canada

My mother, daughter, and I went for a little road trip through Canada. We went straight North to Banff, then headed West to Whistler, then a little more West to Vancouver Island. I didn’t check the odometer, but I’m guessing we covered about 3,000 miles in two weeks.

Attack of the Killer Zucchini

It came from the garden – which is probably why everyone keeps running away, screaming. Of all the seeds I planted, the one I didn’t plant has done the best. This zucchini plant is a volunteer left from what I planted last year. Behind it are the snow peas, eggplant, and tomato that survived the transplant in Spring. The only thing that is coming in abundance is the zucchini. I have a monster zucchini that came off the plant a […]

Physical Therapy

It has now been six weeks since I started getting physical therapy for my arthritic leg. I’m far from optimal, but I’m doing a whole lot better. It still hurts to bend over and pick things up off the floor. It still hurts to stand up. It still hurts if I sit for too long. But I can now ride my bicycle again. I only managed to go a couple of blocks, but I count it a joyous victory. I […]

Big Sky Ren Fest

A few weeks ago I went to the Big Sky Renfair. I missed some of the bigger events, which took place on a rainy Friday when I was insanely busy; but I managed to catch a couple of entertaining acts. A woman did an contortionist act involving two long swaths of fabric attached to a tipi of poles. Except that she mostly did climbing and posing rather than swinging and jumping, it reminded me a bit of the trapeze. I’m […]

Awards

You may have noticed that I made a change or two in the way my blog looks. I have moved all the awards from my left sidebar to here. I’ve been thinking for sometime that I should remove them from my sidebar. Most are from my early days of blogging when people were into giving each other these things as a game. Most of them don’t mean all that much. But aren’t they pretty? I was kind of using them […]

Fourth of July Tradition

My family comes up with traditions pretty fast. For instance, we seem to have developed a new Fourth of July tradition. Each year we go down town to see the municipal fireworks display. Each time I bring my camera with the intention of getting some bloggable photos. And every year I fail. Miserably. Sadly, I’m going to impose my lousy pictures on you anyway. 🙂 It generally starts with the best of intentions, but too many distractions. By the time […]

Physical Therapy

Aren’t you glad I didn’t include any pictures? It all started well over a year ago when I pulled a groin muscle. At the time I considered it nothing special because I’d pulled the muscles on one or both sides many times while getting on my bicycle or standing up and moving away from my desk too quickly.

Odds and Ends

Seems like there’s always more to do than I can handle. I’ve got a to-do list a mile long, but most of it can wait. What can’t wait any longer is the physical therapist. For quite a while now I’ve been limping around with a torn ligament. Silly me. I thought if I just stayed off it long enough it would mend itself. Over a year later, and I’m still limping. Turns out that my efforts have actually crippled me. […]

Time to Face the Music

I knew when I took on The Serioalists that I would be facing a difficult challenge; how to keep people actively engaged, especially when I’m such a slow reader. But I had hope that I would be able to attract enough writers to make it worth while. Sadly, I find I am already out of energy. I simply can’t come up with the time and enthusiasm necessary to get the ball rolling again. So as much as it pains me, […]
