Lock Down

I happened to be in a grade school recently when a practice lock down was ordered.  At first I didn’t know what was happening.  One minute I was passing out juice, the next the teacher had locked the door and turned off the lights.  All the kids piled into a corner and sat down.  Even I was expected to sit on the floor making as little noise as possible. We remained like that for half an hour.  I timed it because […]

Bad Attitude. Yippee!

As I mentioned last week, I spent this week helping put on a dance recital.  Actually, production is probably more the word.  We had platforms that rolled onto the stage, then turned a few times before rolling back off, tutus and crowns, consumes with lots of feathers, and at one point about 75 kids on stage at the same time ranging from high school age to three year olds.It was a blast. The thing I liked the best?  Getting away […]

Stage Mom

I’m busy with the girl’s dance recital now.  I’ve already put in several hours trying to figure out which prop is supposed to go where when, but not nearly as much as I did last year. It seems I’ve been supplanted as stage manager.  I went in expecting to do my usual work and found someone else doing it instead.  And I feel… … such relief! I’m almost giddy with it.  I will still end up doing a lot of […]

Life, Death, and Taxes

I’m almost done with taxes.  If I hadn’t stopped to watch an Inuyasha disk I’d have finished.  It’s Mr. Al’s fault for luring me to the couch.  Anyway I still have a few hours to get it done in. Usually at this time of year I dream in numbers.  I will be so immersed in the work that I see papers covered in instructions and numbered columns in my sleep.  Not this year.  In the last few days my dreams have […]

Extension

This time of year, when I’m crunching numbers and not liking any of them and am dealing with revenue streams – or trickles as the case may be – from a variety of sources I am reminded that I’m NOT a tax accountant.  I don’t live and breath tax law all year long.  I just sort of muddle through the season.First I have to get the books ready for the tax accountant at work.  Apparently he has been very happy […]

The Road Way More Travelled Than it Ought To Be

Mr. Al insisted on going for a hike last Saturday.  I kept pointing to the hills and saying “snow” but that didn’t slow him down any.  So, after digging round in three closets and a workshop for my missing shoes – as the only thing I ever wear these days is my crocks – we packed it in and headed for our favorite trail-head. It’s dirt road a good part of the way.  We were tooling along just fine […]

Busy

I didn’t do much this week.  Funny how I can get all kinds of things done, but not feel like I’ve accomplished anything when I don’t write much.  For instance, I arranged to have Mona Risk guest blog on Romance Roundtable (look for her on Feb 11th) , Talked Victoria Alexander into doing another Chat with the FanLit Forever board (Feb. 26th), and arranged for Helen Scott Taylor to guest blog here in Alice’s Restaurant (Hopefully some Monday soon). What […]
