Power Plant in Iceland

We visited a power plant run by the city of Reykjavik. They are open to visitors every day. Many tour groups wander through. Their public areas are full of informational displays, including many interesting wall designs, and museum like display cases.

Diabetes and Heart Disease Prevention Program End

In January I started a second tour of the Diabetes and Heart Disease Prevention Program. At that time I signed a paper committing myself to attending classes with the program through out the year. Today, after the end of the class, we were informed that funding had not been renewed. The program came to an immediate and abrupt end. I offer my fond farewells. 1. I didn’t learn nearly as much from this go around as the first time through. […]

A Greenhouse in Iceland

Iceland doesn’t exactly have a fantastic growing season. Much of their produce is grown in greenhouses. Primarily, they grow tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumber – three items that appeared at nearly every meal we ate. The greenhouse we toured grew flowers. They told us the name, but my recording is so garbled I couldn’t tell you what it is. They specialize in bouquets. This means they grow a wide variety of flowers which are delivered to many outlets in Selfos […]

Broken Glasses

1. My new glasses came! 2. The visibility strip on the right eye is just to the inside. 3. To see clearly, I have to be a little cross eyed. 4. This is probably because when I had my measurements taken, I kept glancing to the left. I regret that. 5. I can see well enough now to process pictures. 6. Unluckily, something went wrong with my software and none of the pictures are visible in my blog. 7. It’ll […]

Keeping It Short

I broke my glasses. They snapped off at the bridge just from trying to wipe off a sweat drop. My old glasses are so bad I have to hold them six inches in front of my face to see clearly. it’s making it really hard to process photos. So… I’ll be back to Iceland in a couple of weeks – after the replacements on order come. For this week I’m going with 13 words. 1 It’s 2 Forest 3 Fire […]

Random 13

1) 2) I have fewer than 13 posts left to go on my Iceland trip. Aren’t you glad? 3) It’s supposed to hit 100 deg F here today. 4) A couple of days ago the low was in the 50’s. 5) I can’t decide if I should pull the blanket from the bed or not. 6) I’m finally over Viking music. Now I’m into Industrial Dance. 7) The cats keep staring at me. 8) I keep checking on the food […]

Iceland Day 9

It was a day of ice and water, with a little lava tossed in here and there. First up was a waterfall you could walk behind.

Ice Cave

We took a Super Truck tour out of Vik, which is the sothernmost village in Iceland, to a spot in the lava flows several miles to the east. There’s a glacier in the area. If you are lucky, conditions will be right for walking through the tunnels formed by glacier melt runoff. We were lucky.

Iceland Day 8

This day was all about fame and popularity. From the place where Of Men and Monsters practiced, to the worlds oldest parliament, then on to the geyser named Geysir, and the Golden Waterfall, We managed to cover a lot of ground. Stitched in among all the walking and wool gathering was an airplane ride from Akureyri to Reykjavik, then bus ride from Reykjavik to Selfoss. Think flight from the North to the South corners of the island, then bus from […]

13 Stars

Ok, I’m a day late for Independence Day, and Pride Month was June. I’m just not a timely person.

Down Time

It had only been a day since Bruce’s rock band, Maliprop, got kicked out of Gene’s house. Already Bruce missed the place. No more sitting on the floor with everyone dreaming up lyrics. No more ice cream or free meals. No more sage advice from weird old folks. Even if they had another place to practice, all the fun was gone. He hadn’t broken anything or threatened anyone and still…. Sometime he wanted to scream. Not. My. Fault! Worst part? […]

Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir is known for two things. First, and foremost to me, is that this is where a major rift between the Eurasian tectonic plate and the North American tectonic plate is opening up. In other words, the world is tearing itself apart here. Each continent is determined to go it’s own way. Between them, the Earth’s Mantle is dangerously close to the crust. Iceland in general is covered in lava. In this particular spot, it is welling up, then splitting […]

Icelandic Bands

. We stopped in a town where Of Monsters and Men, among other bands, were known to practice. It got me thinking about Icelandic music. So I looked up some popular bands.
