Mirror Rock Cave

At this point our group split up. About half flew home. The rest of us continued on to Flores Island for an extra week of exploring. We flew in, arriving mid-day. On the way from the airport to our hotel we stopped off at Mirror Rock Cave for a little light spelunking. We were very lucky to do it during the dry season. On the walk in from the parking area to the cave you could easily see how the […]

Offerings

When we got on the boat to visit Trunyan Village and the Bali Aga Cemetery there were a couple of trays of offerings in the middle of the walk way. When we came back they had accumulated, spilled down the steps, and crept out onto the dock.

Accommodations

All the places we stayed in Indonesia were quit grand. Marble floors were common. The beds were all very comfortable. Generally we each had our own double or even queen sized. Although I struggled with it, I could be sure every place offered wireless. They didn’t even charge extra for it. Every place offered some kind of breakfast. Most offered turn down service complete with sweets. I didn’t get any pictures of the one in Jakarta. We arrived in the […]

Julia Robert’s Beach

This is at the very back of the farthest trail to the left at Uluwatu Cliffside Temple. they were very busy putting in a new segment to the trail when we arrived. I went just because I have a bad case of Down The Trail Syndrome. Though I like Julia’s acting, I feel no compulsion to visit a every place she’s done a bit of it. I don’t even know which movie that beach appears in. But if there is […]

Uluwatu Cliffside Temple

The grounds around the Uluwatu Cliffside Temple are extensive. From the parking lot we had a leisurely half hour walk to where the temple perches on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. Most of that walk takes place along a wide, brickwork walkway filled with little steps up and down. The walkway runs along the top edge of a cliff. A nice, thick wall runs along the outside of the walkway. The walkway curls off to the right […]

The Lap of Luxury

The Girl is moving out! She signed her first rental agreement and is loading up her boxes. In a matter of mere…. Well, whenever she gets around to it. Considering the disaster area she calls a bedroom it could be a while. She tells me it looks worse than it is because of the packing process. I’m pretty sure there aren’t even available paths to get around. As the the pet spiders she was raising under her bed, I’d rather […]

A Random Textile Factory

It wasn’t in the little itinerary booklet the company provided us with, but we made an excursion to a textile factory while we were in the Jimbaran area. The workers paid very little attention to us. I know they get a fair amount of visitors because another group went through right after us and we all ended up on the sales floor.

Back to School

The totally random picture above is a bus stop on Rinca Island. It reminded me of the shelters built by ranchers for their children to wait in for a school bus.

13 Statues in Bali

We just drove past. Your guess is probably as good as mine. I kind of recognized some Hindu characters that I already talked about here. They tended to run on the large size. 1.

Soda Drinking Bats

Tourists and tour guides feed Fanta to the bats in the Subek area. It was fun to watch, but I have mixed feelings.

Rice Terraces Between Lovina and Jimbaran

Between Lovina and Jimbaran the volcanic soil coils around to form steep hills. Indonesians have industriously terraced them into a unique combination of rice paddies and irrigation system. The irrigation system is called subak. It is woven into the landscape and the culture of Bali. UNESCO World Heritage protects the entire subek area. Rice is first planted in a small nursery area within the fields. This is because many seeds won’t sprout. Rather than letting large patches of field fall […]

Tourist Trap

On the way to Jimbaran we ran across the strangest tourist trap I’d encountered. It consisted of a way side pull out and this ram shackle tower. If you set foot on the tower, for instance, should you feel you need the extra height in order to get a good picture of the scenery below, then someone will run out and demand that you pay for the privilege. My thought was that they’d have to pay me to be willing […]

Dolphins

On the thirteenth day of the trip we were told to assemble on the beach at the crack of dawn for an unscheduled treat. This was an optional side excursion. After some effort on our guide’s part’s, we were divided up into sets of three or four, and sent off in catamarans to look for dolphins.

Community Lunch in Tiga Wasa Village

The name of this three has escaped me. That’s a real pity because so much of this post is going to be about it. I’m going to call it a palm for convenience sake, but don’t quote me. After we walked around in the rest of the village, we found hooked up with our host for lunch. He made much of his living off of the palm trees growing randomly on his land. One of the main crops for him […]
