I think a very strong case could be made that Keith Richards is the incarnation of George the IV. But seriously folks, Ann is right, those rare few people who, by accident of birth or fate find themselves surrounded by people who cannot, or will not, say "no" to them tend to come to an unhappy end. England is fortunate that King George IV "only" ran up a huge tab.
His personal life was a disaster, but at least he didn't drag the entire country down with him as was the case with Hitler, Stalin and Ivan the Terrible. Boy, the Russians have really had a bad time of it with Absolute Rulers. The Chinese also. Mao was no choir boy,he may have called himself a Communist, but the foundation he built on was laid down by China's ancient emperors.
Cromwell tried to run England as, basically, a military/ theocratic dictatorship. That proved to be less than popular.

Isn't it sad how unhappy the man was?! To be king and to have to go to all that trouble day in and day out. I'm happy to be a peasant. :)

Great blog as always, Mr. Al! :)

How strange. You know this begs a novel where he's given an alternative outcome to relieve this boredom.

Interesting synchronicity. I just read this about George IV's Brighton Pavilion a couple weeks ago: http://nineteenteen.blogspot.com/2009/09/brightons-shining-star-royal-pavilion.html

What surprises me isn't that royals ended up addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, but that they all didn't. Like many of today's music and movie stars, they surrounded themselves with people whose job it was to never tell them no. Such situations tend to end badly.

Whoa! As sad as it is I shouldn't be surprised. But I feel sorry for the poor man even if all this was brought on by self-indulgence.
