Halfway

I have now officially hit the half way point in my book. I was writing much more efficiently at the beginning of the month when my part time job went full time and my obligations in all kinds of places went nuts.

Now I’ve finally hit a lull in the pressure, and wouldn’t you know the writing slowed way down. I think it’s because I have time to actually think about what I’m putting down “on paper”. When it comes to writing fast, it’s never a good idea to look too closely at what’s there.

In spite of everything I’ve managed to hit the half way point in my current book. Each book I write comes out a bit different. This one is very heavy on narrative. I haven’t written so little dialogue in proportion in decades. Yet it’s still showing rather than telling. It has to do with the unique nature of this book’s point of view. This one isn’t about the action itself nearly as much as about the argument behind why the action is brought out.

Unlike most of my books, I’ve already got the last lines of the book written. I have fragments from dozens of scenes floating around. When I think of having to tie them all together before the end I’m intimidated. I have to take a big step back and recall that the only requirement for “winning” NaNo is to have written 50,000 words by the end of the month. This kind of book tends to run between 100,000 and 200,000 words. I have plenty of room in which to pull it all together, and more than just one month to do it. When I think that way, it gets easier to write again.

Anyway, I got squeezed by word counts and obligations last Friday and never got a post up. I’d apologize, but you all will just tell me it’s no problem anyway. 🙂 I feel kind of bad about messing up, but it’s bound to happen now and then. I knew it would be a particular problem with Friday Electioneers because I can’t work ahead much. Not that I’ve been working ahead on any of my other posts anyway, but there’s still the psychology of it.

Anyway I could drivel on about word counts, but I already see your eyes glazing, so I’ll stop here. Thanks for visiting.
