13 Changes

As I mentioned a few months ago, I’m part of a special program designed to help people with a predisposition to heart disease and diabetes. The program is called Lifestyle Balance. The point is to make permanent changes in our lifestyles that will promote health and longevity. Here are some of the changes I’ve noticed so far.

1. I have lost twenty pounds since the beginning of February. Not bad for three and a half months of dieting. Given how slowly I have lost weight in the last several attempts, I assumed it would take a full year to reach this point.

2. My pants had gotten so tight that they road up. I’m still wearing the same pants, but I’ve taken in the seams and they now hang.

3. The muffin top is gone even if the fat roll is not. It’s smaller and more flat.

4. I eat ice cream at a rate of one spoonful a day.

5. I go to ridiculous measure to get in half an hour of aerobic exercise each day.

6. I can walk two miles without rest. In January the pain was so great I could barely make it around the block. And this was after a full year of physical therapy

7. I still have trouble putting my socks on, but it isn’t so daunting.

8. I make up recipes that include flax seed. Some are an acquired taste. I’ve acquired the taste.

9. I have memorized the number of grams of fat and calories in cheese, milk, bananas, and air bake crackers.

10. I no longer eat biscuits.

11. I can bicycle down town. In January I couldn’t make it around the block for the pain.

12. I eat a lot more salad.

13. I drink less fruit juice.
