Back to School

The totally random picture above is a bus stop on Rinca Island. It reminded me of the shelters built by ranchers for their children to wait in for a school bus.

It’s that time of year again; the season of kid’s clothing sales, deep discounts on spiral bound notebooks, and Halloween decorations. Yep. It’s time for school to start again, and the manufacturers are jumping way ahead of schedule. Should I be concerned that my neighbor had a table devoted to Christmas decorations in her yard sale last week?

Well, I’ll try not to get started on that particular rant. What I had in mind when I started writing this was the strange perspective of a parent whose kids have just reached the age where they are no longer under my roof, but still weighing heavily in my life.

The Boy starts classes today. The Girl is still studying up for her ACT/SATs. The nest isn’t quite empty yet, but getting closer. I’m the one feeling like a fledgling. It’s been 21 years since I’ve been the captain of my own life. I can’t wait.
