I used to live in a house with a great fireplace. I love having a fireplace. It gives me peace of mind to know I can light a fire whenever the weather overwhelms my furnace – something that has happened to me on several occasions.
This one was particularly nice because the lay out of the house fed the heat to the otherwise unheated upstairs. It had an insert to keep the chimney from turning into a huge energy drain when the fire wasn’t lit, but you could still see the fire inside if you kept the tempered glass clean.
Now I bake.
How about you? How are you keeping warm this year? Or if you’re on the other side of the world, how are you keeping cool?

Geeze Uhhh put more clothes on.
I would love a fireplace some day. Currently, my apartment is on an exposed northeast corner so while the living room may be nice and toasty, my bedroom and bath are always 10-20 degrees colder. Seriously. You can actually feel the temperature drop as you walk down the hall, and it’s worse the more the wind blows. Which means extra blankets on the bed and wearing a sweater (or two) whenever working at the computer. It also means letting the hot water run 5-15 minutes every time I use the bath or wash in ice cold water. I sooo need a new apartment!
That or better insulation.
We have a fireplace we never use. Our last house had a basement and a living room fireplace that we never used.
Somehow in our house the front of the house, the kitchen and living room are so cold that if you leave water in the sink it will freeze. But the bedrooms are extremely hot! We wake up sweating if we’re not careful. If for some reason we need to spend a lot of time in the front of the house, we turn on the oven, the dryer, and add more layers of clothing.
I think I’d rather have bedrooms cold than front rooms.
warm wishes coming to you from me–have a merry Christmas!
