Sweet Talker

Jack: It’s all right, Darling. I know you didn’t mean to break the scale. Don’t worry about it. Besides, a little extra weight just makes you cuddly. Jack: Ooof!!! Jack: Darling! Now wait a minute! Where are you going? Jack: If either of you tell her who really broke the scales there’ll be no more secret snacks for either of you. Suzie’s House 152: Have a Little Faith in my Love

“Humph!” Suzie twisted out from under Drew’s hands. She looked as adorable is an angry kitten, sitting there in the bed of the Door County’s Best Bed and Breakfast, her bare shoulders rising above the line of the frilly covers. (The remainder of this episode is on the newsletter.)

Good Bye Wise Friend

He walks slowly into a shroud, lingering, lingering, Talking to those walking behind, Giving his brave monologue of experience In simple words made vast by insight. I would call to him, plead, Please stay. Don’t leave us. But I know the futility. He does not realize his feet aren’t moving. What closes the distance is the shroud. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Click on the badge to go […]

13 of This and That.

Just stuff on my mind this week. 1. To those who have been reading Suzie’s House this week, thank you! I get a major kick out of seeing new readers. Old readers, too. Heck, any readers at all thrill me. 2. Dr. John died. At least that’s what Nessa says, and I trust her to know. I have been following his Pigeon Falls stories since I first became aware of them. He was a frequent and welcome visitor here. I’m […]

Ah Maria, Hungarians and the Underdog

Queen Maria Theresa of Austria faced her first year as queen with an invasion. Sweet young thing as she was, everyone assumed she would roll over and hand her kingdom off. Silly men should have known better. Maria, in the face of the intense opposition of nearly all her advisors, traveled to Pressburg, the then capital of Hungary. The Hungarians were, to put it mildly, an unruly lot. Their leaders were fervently nationalistic, fond of fighting among themselves and your […]

Once Upon a Valentine’s by Holly Jacobs

MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. Grab your current read, open to a random page, share a couple of “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. Go see Should Be Reading for more detail. From p 87 of Once Upon a Valentine’s “It’s not you, it’s me.” Chuck glanced at her and shook his head. “that phrase is the kiss of death. All men fear it.” I’m giving away this and four other books next Monday. All you […]

Did you watch last night?

Mr. Al and I actually made an effort to watch part of the Olympics yesterday. It’s not really our thing, generally, but the skating stuff is fun and we got into the skiing, especially when a Montana boy made good. Did you bother to watch? Warning, this is just a TV promo video thing. I couldn’t find anything from last night yet.

Rocks

Here’s a quick and easy “recipe” for you. Or maybe a tutorial. You know that sugar cookie recipe from last Sunday? When you cut out the shapes you end up with dough between. The more you work that dough, clumping together and re-rolling, the tougher the cookies get. Rather than getting tough cookies or wasting the dough, loosely scrunch it together into rough balls and bake. Instant rocks.
