55 – The Grocery Store Santa

He set up his kettle in front. With each person to pass by, he smiled, his eyes crinkling above the snowy white beard. Marybeth walked right past, averting her eyes so she wouldn’t have to dig in her purse for change. On the way out, her way was blocked by a passing car. She didn’t mean to glance at him. And there it was, the crinkle of the eyes of a knowing smile. She came up with the change. The […]

Suzie’s House 240: Proximity.

Maria couldn’t wait to get Vin alone. Not that Toby mattered, but she really didn’t want Drew to hear what she had to say. The problem was that once the four of them sat down in the living room, both Drew and Vin became immobile.

Jack and Jill Today

. . . There is not a hub for PhotoHunt today. There might be one next week, or there might not. In the meanwhile there is no list of themes, and therefor nothing for Jack and Jill to play off of. So far my other ideas for Jack and Jill have not yet panned out. So, I thought I’d do a little retrospective. Anyone remember these?

55 – Letter to a Future Self

Will you remember this moment? There have been so many that slipped through our fingers like sand, leaving nothing but residue. Will these white walls covered in loving bric-a-brac remain? Will you still have a mind left, or will you be like Algernon; reduced to drool and nothing but a vague feeling of dissatisfaction? You scare me. The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story in exactly 55 words. Flash Fiction 55 is hosted by […]

Suzie’s House 239: Maria

When Drew said, “Maria’s waiting. You’ll be staying with us,” Vin’s heart sank. It sounded like Drew had done the very thing Suzie had feared – found a new love. Vin didn’t want that. Suzie and Drew were too good a match. In Vin’s mind, the future was about himself and Miranda hanging out with Drew and Suzie. How could there be any other way? He stepped out of the airport in Drew’s wake and found at least part of […]

The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart p. 369

The voice that had said so (who would and who would not triumph in a war), that said so now in the musty dark of Camalach’s room, was not my own; it was the god’s. One did not lie awake looking for reasons; one obeyed, and then slept. MizB of Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesday. Grab your current read, open to a random page, share a couple of “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. Go see Should Be […]

Brick Walls

I ran into not one, but two brick walls last week. These are walls that you, personally, might notice. The first was the collapse of TNChick as the hub for PhotoHunt. For the last two or three years, ever since there were some health issues in her family, she has been unable to really tend the hub, but this closing down was no real surprise. She did at least offer it up for grabs, so the meme itself stands a […]
