Suzie’s House 374 : Gene Writes a Song

Suzie's House

Gene felt like a total idiot sitting there in the back yard with a pencil in his hand and a notebook on his lap. Maybe he should at least get his guitar. But he’d already tried this a dozen times with his guitar and his room was so stuffy. At least it was breezy out here.

“It’s a big, hairy problem,” he muttered. “No. Not musical enough.”

He knew this wasn’t going to be easy right from the beginning. But he was determined to do it. Before he saw Tracy again, he was going to have written this song. He wanted to get it on paper.

“Monstrous. That’s the word. ‘It’s a monstrous, hairy problem.’ E7 to B7.”

He wasn’t real sure what the cords would sound like. Well, it would have to do for now. He’d fix it later if he had to.

“She says she’s not a victim, but the scars are still all there.” If there was such a thing as a mumbling way to sing, that’s what he was doing. His voice sounded thin and wavery, but he couldn’t do anything about it without getting louder.

He had the yard to himself, but couldn’t help feeling like someone might still overhear him. Maybe he should move around so he didn’t have his back to the house. His back was getting stiff with the feeling someone might sneak up on him.

“I know what it feels like,
the punch and kick
the hand like a whip
but I’m no victim, hmmm, hmmm,
No I’m no victim
But I still want to kill him. Yeah.”

The “yeah” came out a little loud, and made him look around. He scooted his lawn chair around so he could see the house, but then he felt like someone might come up from the neighbor’s yard and he kept looking at the kitchen door. This was how he’d started out, and he already knew it wouldn’t work.

But there were more words now. He didn’t know if any of them were any good, but at least he had them.

“She’s been through it all,
and I’m not just talking the fall.
Mmmm hmmmm hmmmm
But she still stands tall.
She’s no victim, hmmm, hmmm,
No, she’s no victim, she’s got a vision
But I still want to kill him. Yeah.”

Something was off. He couldn’t see where, but something didn’t fit.

Then again, maybe he shouldn’t be writing this song at all. He thought about what it would be like to show it to Tracy. She might get mad at him. Again.

But so what? This was the first time he really wanted to write about something. Maybe it wouldn’t be a very good song, but no matter what he wanted to write it. He better hurry up with it, because he wanted to see Tracy, too, and he was afraid it might never get written at all if he saw her even once before it was done.

“But I still want to kill him. Yeah.”
