“What are you writing?” Lisa leaned into Ben’s back.

“Nothing.” He covered the paper, not wanting her to see.

He knew he shouldn’t have tried to write something like this when Lisa was around. She always wanted to help. Most of the time he liked it, but this time he didn’t feel comfortable sharing.

“Is this from those stories you were writing about the toe eating slugs?”

“Uh… no.” Ben looked at her, waiting for her to move away. A lot of times she leaned against the desk and looked at him instead of what he was doing when he wanted to write. Usually it bugged him because he was trying to show her something. This time she didn’t do it.

“I like those stories. I do.” She leaned harder into him. “You sure it isn’t going to be one of those?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

Ben started to sweat. He liked it when Lisa leaned against him. Most of the time. She didn’t do it all that often, and he didn’t want to do anything that would make her stop all together. But why now? He had ideas now! He wanted to write them before he forgot.

“Let me see?” She said in that wheedling kind of voice.

“Ermm,” Ben closed the notebook.

What was he going to do? He had to distract her somehow. But how?

She leaned more so he thought she might even fall. That gave him the idea. He just kind of let his shoulder down and twisted a little, and got an arm around her and plop! She dropped right into his lap.

Wow!

There she was, leaning back in his arms like in a movie or something and there he was sitting there, feeling so totally cool. She looked at him with big eyes, not doing anything. So maybe he ought to be doing something. Like, maybe kiss her?

Did he have the never? He better! I didn’t want to lose this coolness. He puckered up and leaned toward her.

“What are you doing?!” Lisa wiggled around, dodging him

He let go fast, face getting hot. She must think he was a total idiot. Worse, she fell on the floor with a thump.

“Oh G0d! I’m sorry!” He leaned down to pick her up.

Lisa started giggling. She quick rolled over and kind of crawled off, laughing harder and harder. When she stood up, her face looked as red as his felt. She was still giggling.

“Um…. I’m going to….” She waved toward the door with one hand and covered her face with the back of the other.

“Um… yeah. Ok.” He watched her skip-hop to the door, worried because now what if she didn’t want to see him anymore?

“Um, yeah. I’ll see you tomorrow?” She stopped at his door and looked at him, still covering her face.

“Ok. See you tomorrow.” He grinned.

She grinned back, then ran away.

He kind of felt a little let down because she was gone. But it was good, cause now he could write and she was coming back tomorrow so he didn’t mess up too bad, and he’d almost kissed her. That was great.

Happy, he flipped open the spiral notebook. He got his pencil then stopped. Now, what was it he was going to write?
