“Have you heard the rumors? Gene and Tracy are looking for band mates. Can you imagine? I want to do it! I want to be in their band.”

Kate looked around at all her friends – Katy, Emma, and Alishia, waiting for their eyes to go big. Kate had been sitting on that piece of information for a whole period, and now that they were out in the hall she couldn’t wait to get their reaction.

“Me too!” All three girls said at the same time. They shrieked and looked around to see who might be listening.

“But that would never happen,” Katy said. “They don’t even know we exist.”

“Speak for yourself,” Alisha said, flicking back her brown hair. She just got a new three-layer cut and now she kept playing with it. “Tracy borrowed a pencil from me just yesterday.”

“But I’ll bet she doesn’t know your name,” Katy said. Katy liked to burst people’s bubbles, especially Kate’s. It was like she had to do it because they had the same name, or something.

Emma stood there and nodded with everything Katy said. She hardly ever talked anyway. Cute as a cupie doll, she made Kate think of a blond bobblehead.

“Besides, how would we even do it?” Katy narrowed her green eyes. “I mean, it’s not like we can just walk up and tell them we want to be in their band. They’re like an endangered species. Those four are always off by themselves like they don’t have any friends, but everyone talks about them. It’s like we have ‘Gene, Tracy, Ben, and Lisa’ sightings.”

Great. Katy was on a roll. If Kate let her go on, she’s take up all the time until the next bell and they’d be late for class. Kate just had to interrupt.

“There holding an audition in the band room after school. I’m going.” Kate savored the shocked looks.

“What? You’re going to sing? I’m a better singer,” Alisha said. “What? I’m serious.”

“Gene plays lead guitar, and Tracy plays bass,” Kate ignored the way her friends shoved each other against the lockers. “So I guess I’ll play drums.”

“Drums? You’re kidding.” Alisha pouted. She hated it when anyone did anything she couldn’t.

“They’ll say you can’t because you’re a girl, or something. You won’t make the cut. Do you even know how to play?” Katy waved at the idea like a Valley Girl.

“Yeah. I do.”

Emma, caught between, looked from one of them to another like a puppy who couldn’t tell where the treat went.

“Guys are stronger, so they can play louder. They’ll only want guys. It’s a Rock band, right? They’ll only want guys, except for Tracy.”

“I don’t care. I’m going to try anyway. You guys should, too.”

The bell rang. Kate went off to class, not really caring if they were going to go with her or not. Because this was probably the only chance she’d ever get to hanging out with people as popular as Gene and Tracy. It was worth making a fool of herself just for that.
