Suzie’s House 525 : Where’s Vin?

“Miranda, where’s Vin?” Drew barely waited for her to open the door to the room she shared with Vin before asking.

“What? You think I’m his social secretary or something?” She stepped into the hallway. “He isn’t here.”

In truth, she’d been worried about him for a while now. He was working the kind of scary case that had once lead a pair of killers right to their door. Only way back then it had been Drew’s case and Drew had everyone in the house backing him up. This time Vin was completely on his own.

Not that he’d given Miranda any say in the matter. Admittedly, she’d only started to feel a spark of interest in the last couple of weeks. To her credit, before then she’d been so busy with cutting the album with the kids and setting up the advertising champagnes using their songs. She’d been distracted.

Her imagination went off in all kinds of unpleasant directions. She bit her lip as she closed the door behind her. With a quick glance at Drew she asked what she was trying so hard to not think about.

“You think he’s okay? I mean, do you know? Where he might be?”

“He’s really not in your room?” He tilted his head suspiciously.

“He’s not,” She growled. She threw the door open on the explosion of dirty laundry and unmade bed inside.

“You’re old room?”

“Never!” Didn’t everyone know that Vin was far to respectful to invade her inner sanctum uninvited?

Drew swore as he ran one hand over his face. He looked more grim than when he thought he was going crazy. He finished the gesture with a hard look. “I don’t supposed he told you anything about the case he’s working on right now.”

“He… a little. But I don’t remember anything.” Guilt raked her gut on that admission.

“Same here.” Drew looked almost as guilty as she felt, and that was saying something. “When was the last time you saw him?”

“This morning. You?”

“A couple of days ago.”

It shouldn’t have pleased her to know she had seen Vin more recently. She knew better. Yet still…

Drew turned at the sound of a herd of elephants coming up the stairs. Within minutes they were engulfed by the kids.

“What’s going on?” Ben lead the pack. He was probably just headed toward his own room further down the hall. But when he stopped, some of the band members who were about to pile into Gene’s room drifted closer.

“We’re looking for Vin,” Miranda said. “Have any of you talked to him lately?” Until Drew shot her a look, she didn’t think anything about it.

Ben shrugged. “Not in a couple of days. He was muttering something about serial killers with political backing and… mafia?” Ben glanced at the others.

“Hey, that might make a good song,” Tracy piped up.

“Nah. Too messy. Just make it serial killers.” Bruce threw in his usual wet towel. It didn’t seem to bother Tracy at all.

While the kids turned the whole thing into a joke, Drew turned pale. Swearing under his breath, he raced down the stairs.
