Suzie’s House 531 : Ride

“Vin!” Miranda threw open the car door and jumped out, almost falling off her wicked heels before he caught her and pulled her close. Her soft curves settled nerves he hadn’t realized were raw.

“Thank G*d! Vin. Are you sure you’re alright?” She ran her hands over him, then checked her palms as if to find damage that way. When nothing turned up, she stepped back to arms length and gave him a visual check.

Vin felt a chuckle rumble low in his chest. Considering what could have happened, he’d come out smelling like a rose. It amaze him even more than it must amaze his friends and true love.

Suzie had also gotten out of the car. She wrapped her arms around both at once and gave a squeeze. He let himself indulge, but not for long.

“Quick. We better get in the car.”

Vin dived into the back seat with Miranda. Suzie got back in the front. Drew hit the gas and they were off.

“We saw… blood.” Miranda choked on the last word. “A trail of it.”

“Not mine,” Vin assured her. He had no intention of telling her exactly where it had come from.

“So. Are we going after this guy?” Drew stared intently through the windshield.

Vin ran a hand over the top of his head and closed his eyes in a gesture more suited to Drew than himself. He was beginning to understand some of Drew’s hesitations in previous cases. At last he spoke.

“I will have to go after him eventually. He will hunt me like a hound chasing down a wounded hare now that I’ve seen… what he does. But not right now. Right now he will be miles and miles away.”

“Alright.” Drew let up on the steering wheel. At the next intersection he turned so they were headed back to Madison. “Count me in from now on.”

“You got your head together?” Vin meant it half in joking.

“He did!” Suzie twisted in her seat to grin. “He passed the last test. He’s been unleashed upon the world.”

Miranda and Suzie both laughed. Drew pulled his shoulders up in a shrug. If Vin could see his face, he’d probably find an embarrassed expression.

“So… we’re…”

“Back in the saddle.” Miranda grinned. “The four rangers ride again!”

Vin let out a sigh of relief. It had been a while since he had felt this sense of camaraderie and support. It felt good.
