First Snow of the Year

Technically, I could say we had our first snow weeks ago – if you count what’s on the mountains. The thing is, mountains can have snow in them in the middle of summer, so it’s kind of hard to use them as a definitive line. Instead, I go by my backyard.

Along about Tuesday or Wednesday last week I stepped out side in the morning to give The Girl a lift to school because she was running late and found this in a box next to the back door. No, it isn’t dandruff. It’s a light sprinkling of snow. The hills were covered from peak to valley. It stayed for most of the day, too. I think that counts.

This is great! It means the forest fires are both smaller, and sending their smoke a different direction. We don’t have to wear masks around town. This is much earlier than I expected, as it’s generally closer to Halloween when we get the first snows.

Mind you, we still have green leaves on the trees around town. More and more of them are changing all over the place. The odd thing is that the turning seems to be happening more to the trees on the West side of the valley than the East. Shouldn’t that be a North and South thing instead? Or if it’s an elevation thing, then it should be running in the reverse.

Meanwhile, I still have some exterior painting to do. I sure hope we get a really warm Indian Summer like the weatherman predicted. Otherwise I’m sunk. I’m quite willing to paint in the cold, but the paint isn’t. Last time I tried pushing it the paint that is supposed to be dry to the touch in two hours took three days. And that was when it was warmer out.
