Finding Moon by Tony Hillerman p.143

It was a murder by self-indulgence, he’d said. Far too many bourbons with water and then too much insistence on driving when Halsey wanted to drive and should have driven.

I generally read Tony Hillerman for the love of the way he portrays the Navajo culture on the reservations in the Four Corners region. This is a completely different thing. The hero is not a police officer in any way, though he had once been a soldier, and he is sent into the thick of the upheaval in Vietnam at the end of the war.
