One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

If I have good rear-view mirrors I might get somewhere. I bought a car recently. Got it from an individual who knows even less about transferring rights than me. He’d from a neighboring town, so when I ran into title transfer issues involving his signature, it mean a few hours on the road collecting him and getting it straightened out. But I’m now the proud owner of a Subaru. Much better gas mileage than my old vehicle. I’m also trying […]

The Exciting Life of a Writer

Writers are by in large a remarkably boring lot. I tend to be a bit more expressive than some, which makes it hard to write in public. I grimace, laugh out loud, tear up and generally get way too involved in whatever I’m writing so that passers by stare. Maybe it’s because a lot of what I write plays out in my head like a movie. Only one that I can stop, alter, and step into at whim. So, while […]

Yard Sale

I spent my weekend on a yard sale. We made about $80 over two days, and managed to get rid of about a third of our stuff. We’re going to try it again in a couple of weeks, only with advertising and much better presentation. This time we just put out the boxes with the stuff in it and let people paw through. The thing about yard sales is they make you think through just what you need and what […]

The Convention and What Next

I’ve been attending Science Fiction conventions since the 1980’s. I’ve only actually gone to four of them, but I’ve gone multiple times. At first I was all over the “Writer’s Track” at the conventions. I was convinced I would learn something deep and meaningful at some panel or another. And I did pick up a few tips here and there, but for the most part, it’s just a handful of writers talking about writing. I’ve learned as much or more […]

Monday?

Well, I knew the convention would be continuing into Monday, but I didn’t think I would be. I had a great time, meet some nice people, learned a thing or two, and generally am pleased with myself. Only problem is, now I’m tired. 🙂

Photos on Etsy

Last week was pretty hectic with choir and drama stuff and The Boy getting busy. Seems when the kid’s schedules rev up, so does mine. But what’s really taking my attention right now is my Etsy store. Recently Etsy added an option that will allow it’s craftsmen to offer digital files. Well, I certainly have enough digital files. Especially if we are talking about pictures. I thought, heck, why not? So I’ve been digging around in my archives for picture […]

Sneezing Kitties

I’ve never had a cat catch a cold before. At least, not like this. I’ve seen them sneeze a time or two, but all day long? Totally new to me. So first it was Diana. A week ago she started sneezing. A lot. We kept an eye on her, hoping whatever had her sneezing would go away on it’s own, kind of like we do with the humans in the house. After a week, I called the vet. Turned out […]

Caribbean Shakespeare

Mr. Al, The Girl, and I went to see Shakespeare at the local university recently. It was an interesting take on the play A Comedy of Errors. The kept the original Shakespearean wording, but moved the setting to a Caribbean island. All the scene changes were accomplished under cover of beach revelers dancing. What a hoot!

The Princess Bride

Last Thursday I mentioned a note about a video on Mr. Al’s desk. Well, here’s the note, somewhat modified by Mr. Al. It all started with The Girl’s friends. It seems most of them have become devotees of the movie The Princess Bride. She’d heard so much about it that she wanted to see it. I knew we had a copy of it, but I didn’t know where. We went through the piles and piles of video tape in the […]

Guest Blogging Icarus

I’m a guest blogger! Actually, I did a bunch of guest blogs when Moving In first came out, but I haven’t been real active since. This time I’m talking about Icarus, his accident, and his accidents, if you know what I mean. 🙂 You can read all about him and see a new picture of him or two at Underneath The Shell. In other news, I’ve once again gone from green grass to snow. Sigh. I don’t think this is […]

Elbow Room

Last Thanksgiving my family and I sat around the dinning room table and talked about what each of us wanted for Christmas. This is a regular event which tends to be harder on the person who is asked what they want than on those asking. Yeah, most of us aren’t kids anymore. If we want it, we just buy it. I tend to be a bit flippant in my response to that question. One year I said I wanted a […]

Cutting

The Girl is at it again. She decided she didn’t like her hair and that the best solution was to grab a pair of scissors and hack away at it. She’s seen me do it often enough, so I suppose I can’t really say anything, but there’s a world of difference between my hair and hers. Specifically, mine’s curly. This makes more of a difference than most people think. I have had people ask if I cut it right after […]

This and That

It’s a this and that kind of weekend. I’m not really focused on anything in particular, just this and that. For instance, I’m still trying to figure out what kind of post I should use to preserve the comments on my welcome page. I thought maybe it would be this one, then I changed my mind. We celebrated Easter with a personal egg hunt. The kids talked me into it. I get a package of candy eggs and scatter them […]

Goodbye Norma Jean

My mother-in-law died last weekend. She was quite old and had suffered poor health for many years, so it came as no surprise. Still, the final blow was fast. She had an aneurysm that reached critical point. Judging from the size, the doctors say she had probably suffered from it undiagnosed for many years. They refused to operate. Apparently even a healthy young body might not make it through the operation. From the moment she went into the hospital until […]
