Stuffed

I don’t know about you, but I’m stuffed. We had family over for the holiday. I really enjoyed their company, and the food was pretty good. I’ll never use goat cheese in a bean casserole again, though. Speaking of food, get a load of the legs on that turkey. I’ve never had one come out quite like that before. It was cooked all the way through, but one leg insisted on sticking up more than the other. Most peculiar. I […]

T-day Countdown

Those of you in USA, got your bird yet? Seems like I’m always late getting mine as I tend to forget I have to let the sucker thaw. I like to give it three or four days in the refrigerator, but sometimes that isn’t enough. I’ll end up poking it a bunch of times to see if it’s even close yet. Used to be I had a great chest freezer in which I would keep a side of beef among […]

NaNoWriMo 2012

It’s National Novel Writing Month again. It’s kind of funny they should call it that when people from all over the world do it at the same time. National? Which nation? Anyway, the idea is to write a book in November. We’re talking rough draft here. My rough drafts are always really, really rough. I’ve been known to throw the whole thing away and start from scratch. Sometimes more than once. For instance, last year I worked on a dragon […]

Doctors and Drums

It was a week of doctors and drums for me. I went in for the kind or routine exam that doctors make you do in order to get your prescriptions refilled and ended up with a colonoscopy. This is not exactly the kind of procedure I look forward to. They keep assuring you that it’ll be fine because even if you’re awake and aware during the exam you won’t remember anything. Does anyone else find this a touch disturbing? The […]

Lost Track

I… Um… get around a little bit. I mean I tend to visit a fair number of blogs. Now and then I will plan on going back to see something, but forget who posted the thing I’m interested in. This happened early last week, when someone mentioned they were writing something that looked like it might be a serial suitable for The Serialists. I didn’t have enough time to check it out when I ran across it, then couldn’t figure […]

How’s the Weather

It’s been nice around here lately. Highs in the fifties, sometimes smokey and sometimes clear. It’s getting clear more and more often. We’re taking a gentle, slow slide into winter. So far. The picture above was taken a few days ago during a clear moment in the middle of a storm. Typical Montana weather. The picture to the left is from last May when the river was running high. I thought I’d take in in the Fall to show the […]

Too Much Junk

We have too much junk. We were planning on holding a yard sale this month to help get rid of some of it, but between the smoke and the cold ended up skipping. I’m thinking we should maybe give it a try anyway. It hit the mid 60’s today. Surely that’s warm enough? Maybe. There are people around town who have been holding one yard sale after another all summer long. Seems like too much work to me, but if […]

First Snow of the Year

Technically, I could say we had our first snow weeks ago – if you count what’s on the mountains. The thing is, mountains can have snow in them in the middle of summer, so it’s kind of hard to use them as a definitive line. Instead, I go by my backyard. Along about Tuesday or Wednesday last week I stepped out side in the morning to give The Girl a lift to school because she was running late and found […]

Goodbye Trailer Court!

Some of you all might remember that my family and I moved into a real house a while back. What I might not have mentioned is that I’ve been working on fixing up the trailer ever since. Mostly it’s been a matter of painting as fast as carpel tunnel would allow, but some of it involved replacement of walls that acquired holes and just general repair. I’ve been at Lowes or Home Depot at least once a week all this […]

Gardens and Weddings

I watched with fascination as a neighbor I don’t generally talk to put in a nice, raised vegetable garden right in the middle of their front yard, then completely wiped it out over night to put in a dance floor for a wedding/reception that they hosted in their yard. I don’t think they even collected any of the vegetables from their garden before doing it. Now there is a big bare spot where their garden used to be and some […]

We Painted Our Shower

The Girl and I went at it together. When we bought the house last summer we painted the surround on the tub/shower a shiny white. There was originally a cheesy picture of a tree done in black on white. I’d intended to put in something similar, but more green. The Girl had other ideas. She won. I find myself staring at the condensation on the leaves while I shower and feeling like I’m in a misty forest.

Forest Fire Season and Shelves

That little red dot in the middle of the picture is the sun. It’s about as good of a shot of a celestial body as I ever manage, but it really doesn’t do it justice. You just cant see how eerie it is to live in a huge cloud of smoke. It’s forest fire season here. Normally we get a bit of haze and the scent of campfire nine days old crops up randomly around town, but that’s about it. […]

Poor Kitty

One of our cats got hit by a car. He’s been known to roam a bit, so we weren’t terribly worried when he didn’t show up for breakfast the first day, but by the second day we were checking with the animal shelters. He’d slipped his collar a few weeks before, but luckily he has one of those chips. I originally thought the chip would act like a GPS or something; that there’d be a way to locate him the […]

76,806 Words

Sometimes things just come together for you. The book I just wrote was like that. Not so much the ending, which I changed three or four times as I went, but just the way the book came together as a whole was great. I’ve got a couple of Works In Progress that are like pulling teeth. To have one whip together so fast and so clean from a start with so little to go on was really fun. This manuscript […]

TracFone and the Heart Pounding Madness

Madness as in anger, that is. Tracfone ripped me off last week. I paid a hundred dollars for a one year card. I gave the card to The Girl for her phone. She told me it worked just fine. But then a couple days later she claimed they had given her the minutes/year then taken them back. But she kept the card. That should have been the tip off. They never gave her the minutes in the first place. When […]
