Iceland Day 6

Day 6 was a very long day. We were on the go from the crack of dawn until bed time. I won’t say night, since there was very little night to be had without the aide of blackout curtains.

We started off with a visit to Godafoss Waterfall. We didn’t cover every trail to be found, but we managed to get a good hike in simply getting to the waterfall then back to the parking lot.

Actually, technically our first stop was a quick visit to a rest stop across the water from Akureyri, which is where I took the picture of the lupines.

From Godafoss we went to the Lake Myvatn area to look at the paint pots. Along the way we stopped off at a place where they make rye bread with geothermal energy. Direct geothermal energy. Apparently we wouldn’t have time to go in and look at the store counter, so our buss pulled into the lot, the guide ran in while we sat there, then she held on to her purchase to share with us later.

We drove past quite a few places with pipes and steam coming out. Iceland is extremely active in a geothermal sense.

Then we went to Dimmuborgir to visit the lonely troll. That was a fairly long hike. Afterward we stopped for lunch.

The restaurant was located on the highway directly across from a very nice park, which I believe to be Namaskard geothermic area. This consisted of a series of rolling hills surrounded by water. Apparently if we were there at the right time of year we could see all kinds of water fowl. As it was, we only saw a handful of lonely ducks, but some truly lovely scenery.

It was cold and rainy, so we didn’t stay there long.

Then it was a fair ride in the bus back to Akureyri to see the Laufus turf house.

We finished the night with the home hosted dinner. In this case, they split us into two groups, each eating with a different family. The one I went to served a wonderful fish casserole that I would love the recipe for. Our hostess spent a few years in the USA, and spoke English well. She normally lives out at a dude ranch. Since it would cost us a hundred bucks to take a taxi to her place, she borrowed a very nice house from her family. We chatted for over an hour, left a small pile of small gifts, and went back to our hotel to crash.

As the the picture to the left, it’s just a shot through the window as we drove past to round it out.
