Suzie’s House 236: The Lurker

Suzie's House

Ben couldn’t stand it any longer. He had to write this all down. This, this drama stuff that always seemed to be a part of Gene was better than fiction! Mrs. Audrey would love it. Ben could write it up so she wouldn’t know and….

He better not let Gene see it. Ever. And that meant Tracy couldn’t find out about it, and so he had to keep it from Lisa. That meant he couldn’t whip out a pencil and paper right now. This was going to be hard. He better watch real close and remember everything.

The cops had the lady who tried to climb into Gene’s bedroom through his window in handcuffs now. The lady cop was talking to Mom and the man cop was talking to Miranda.

Ben decided to go for the man cop. He was about to move away from the door and try to work his way through the crowd in Gene’s room when he felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Vin. Great, now everyone who lived in the house plus Tracy plus the cops and the stalker lady were all in the little bedroom at once.

“Give them room,” Vin said. He stepped backward into the hall.

Ben could have gone ahead and barged in, but then Vin would want to know why, so he got out of the way too. Just as well, cause the man cop came out with the stalker lady in front of him and Miranda right behind.

“Whatever the impetus behind her behavior, she’ll have to take her solace behind bars and her vindication in court.” The cop sounded just like Tracy when he said that. Except Tracy would have messed up all the big words.

All kinds of ideas hit Ben all at once. He could write about the crazy lady going to jail or about her breaking out of jail or maybe just about her getting caught. It was all good.

Why did his muse have to make him itch to write at a time when he couldn’t possibly?

Then came the lady cop and Mom. The lady cop smiled as she said, “So he’ll be coming back as soon as he settles the case in New Mexico? That’s great to hear.”

So she must know Drew, because the only one Ben could think of that was in New Mexico was Drew. Ben was glad he’d be coming back, but a little POed at Mom for not telling him.

The bunch of them went off down the stairs, probably out to the cop car to take the stalker lady away.

Finally Tracy came out with Gene. She looked all excited.

“I wonder if Courtney Love would answer if I sent her a letter and a picture.”

“Tracy, sometimes you sound as crazy about my guitar as Fran.” Gene didn’t look too happy about it.

The two of them went downstairs too. Except Vin, Ben was pretty sure no one else noticed him. But that was good, right? Because now he had good stuff to write about.

Vin gave Ben’s shoulder a pat, then went downstairs after everyone else. Ben didn’t. He went to his room and took out his computer. But once he had a file open and was ready to write, he couldn’t decide because of everything in his head from a just now.

Great. Now there were at least three stories for him to write about – one with the cop and stuff, one about Drew, and one with the guitar and stuff. He should have sneaked out when the muse first clobbered him with the write-about-Gene idea. He could have added a couple of aliens and a farting dog and had the story written by now.
