Portrait of Words #31

Thom of Thom’s Place 4 Well Whatever has a once-a-month writing meme that I’m taking part in. He provides the photos and we come up with a story. Here’s mine:

“Have you heard it, now? Patrick O’Leary intends to drive across the ocean.” Shauna O’Mally told her friend as they took the lift to the ground floor after a long, hot, summer’s day at the office.

“Patrick O’Leary of the Sales Department?” Regan fluttered her heavy, false eyelashes like they were bothering her. She reached up and poked the mascara. “The one who plays the pipes?”

“The very one. I heard it that he leaves tomorrow.”1260805868

The lift doors opened. Being in the very front with a dozen or more behind, Shauna lead the way to the front doors with Regan right beside her.

“What ever for, I wonder.” Regan said as they walked.

“To see his dear mum from what I hear. She’s nutty as a fruitcake, I hear, and old enough he’d be worrying she won’t last much longer. Don’t know why she’d want to live so far off anyway.”

“Wait. Did you say across the ocean? Well, now, how’s he supposed to do that? Is his car made of wood or some such?” Regan stopped on the street out front, turning to face Shauna.

“That’s it, I’m sure. His car is made of wood, and he’ll be there in a week.”

The two of them laughed themselves silly, until they realized who was standing behind them.

“No, no, no, Miss O’Mally,” said Patrick O’Leary. “Ye’ve got it all wrong. I’ll not be floating across in me wooden car. I’ll take the bridge.”
